The feasibility of using floating vegetation to remove nutrients from fishery wastewater is being tested by Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists. Looks like fisheries are starting to incoporate some of the same practices small pond owners use to bind nutrients and protect agains algae. Full Story

This is a good article on the findings of a research test done after the City of Ann Arbor, MI adopted an ordinance limiting the use of phosphorus containing fertilizers.  Just gors to show how much fertilizer run off makes it way into our lakes and rivers. Full story here

Add this to the list of things that make sewage stink: Mosquitoes thrive on it. A new study, presented at the meeting of the Ecological Society of America in Albuquerque, found far more mosquitoes in sewage-contaminated streams than in clean ones. Sewage-bred mosquitoes were also bigger and faster than those in purer waters. Read full [...]
